Kayla Martell

The Two That Got Away is painted from life in Kayla Martell's studio, using model birds, chocolate eggs, and a plant she has unfortunately recently killed (too much sun). In this painting, she paid particular emphasis to trying to push the branches to recede, though all of them were at the same distance from the eye and none actually appeared "in the distance", by desaturating and lightening the branches at the back of the bunch of them. The stripes follow a similar method, but in the distance they tend to clump together. The circles in the pot, mirrored in the abstract designs in the neutral space, play an opposite note to the stripes. As with a lot of Kayla's work, the overall piece is whimsical with strong emphasis on mark-making.
