Spirodela

The subject for this painting was taken from the Belfast Tropical Ravine prior to it's restoration. This unique environment, when in it's wilder state fired my imagination, nature, unruly but contained, teeming with life, intense and colourful, I found many ideas for my compositions.
The edge of the pond acts almost like a window opening onto another plane. It has a grounding effect.
Spirodela, in fact, a variety of common duckweed, is a floating mat whose pattern shapes and transforms our view of the world in the water, inviting our eye to explore painted passages which obscure, reveal, intrigue.
