My painting is a small, oil on panel, depiction of two men researching atmospheric phenomena. The painting title is 'Statistically Improbable Inevitability'. For this painting I found information in film archives on the Earth Resources Technology Satellite, which was the first earth observing satellite developed to collect information on the planet's surface, oceans and atmosphere.
My title is a speculation on what exactly the scientists have come upon, but I like to play with the idea that not all phenomena can be explained from a scientific perspective and so I take the opportunity to reflect this here.
My technique for extracting the image from the film is to take pictures of the screen as the film plays. I am keen on the distortions and colour shifts that occur as a result of this and am interested in how this translates into paint. While this painting is small and representational I also make larger abstract works based on the colours, morphed shapes and references found in the small work.
A little bit about me:
I was born in Canada in 1976 but have been living in Dublin since 2005, I am an Irish citizen now and call Ireland my home. I completed my undergrad at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver BC and just recently graduated (2024) from the Masters in Fine Art at NCAD. I had been working as a graphic designer before leaving my job to pursue art full time.
