'Quietly Magnificent'
Sarah Ruttle.
Pencil on Paper. 40 x 30 cms. (29 x 21 cms Unframed) June 2025.
The focus of Sarah's work is People & Place. Recently she has been
concentrating on capturing moments of humanity, emotion, courage and
hope in contemporary figurative works, often featuring portraiture. This
piece celebrates women of different styles, different languages and
different beliefs. Tyrone born visual artist Sarah Ruttle has a special
interest in addressing division and inequality, influenced by growing up
during the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland, and believes that difference
should be celebrated and not a cause for division. Art can play an
important role in building positive connections across diverse communities
where humanity is recognised and respected, echoing voices of reason
and drowning out voices of hate.
With a foundation in textiles Sarah's interest in creating layers and depth
in her art continues to evolve. Drawings made using pen and pencil are
central to her latest collections with an emphasis on creating detail
through mark-making. In her work you can see evidence of her passion
for texture, pattern and an interest in delicate use of colour. Graduating in
Constructed Textiles from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design,
University of Dundee, Scotland in 2002, Since moving to West Cork
twenty years ago she has established a recognised participatory practice
within an Arts and Health context, in parallel to her solo work.
