Spitalfields Loner is a hand-pulled polymer photogravure print created by visual artist Matthew Gammon. Matthew is both the photographer and printmaker of his work, being both a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a member of Graphic Studio Dublin, Ireland's longest running printmaking studio. The method of creating the print is a modern incarnation of the 19th century photogravure technique, one of the oldest methods of making a photographic print. The print itself features a lone carrion crow in a small tree just next to the hustle and bustle of Spitalfields market in London. The piece is part of Matthew's ongoing project, The Feather Assembly. The project started in 2020 and originally focussed on members of the crow family (primarily rooks and jackdaws) to be found in North-West Ireland where Matthew is based. Over the following five years the project has expanded to include both other members of the crow family and locations further afield, including Scotland, France, Belgium, Italy, Greece, and Japan. The project has led to two solo exhibitions, and work from it formed the twenty-one print panel for which Matthew was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 2023. With this project Matthew has moved away from using traditional etching inks and now uses the more environmentally friendly, Charbonnel Aqua Wash ink to make his prints.
