Tilt
34 x 30 x23
Tilt is part of a body of work - Objects of Time. Thefigurative pieces are not just facsimiles of the objects but are made up of physical and metaphorical layers that represent my memories of them and their context, their function and form, their place in cultural and material history. A palette of techniques and processes is employed to contrast manufacturing techniques with the fallibility of the artist's hand. As with any artefact they evidence their own history, but they also have associations to the ever-changing present landscape and a future story they continue to tell.
Tilt is a representation of an old set of weighing scales from my childhood. It is carved out of a block of black parian porcelain that is reminiscent of brutalist architecture. Mathematical structures of geometry are incorporated throughout. It represents my memories of the hours I spent playing and developing insights into balance, weights and measures. It also has cultural associations to the ancient development of agriculture and trade, which has some resonance today
