Dermot Blackburn

I used to drive my partner to her work at BRA (Belfast Royal Academy), occasionally. One day she suggested I take a walk around the nearby waterworks.

Over the next few years this became a regular occurrence, & eventually a photographic project & self-published book (from which the image is taken).

This year (2025) had an unusually dry Spring, during which a normally waterlogged area completely dried up. Young plants began to grow in this new environment, & in late April / early May an unusually large fall of catkins was followed by an equally large carpet of Bulrush seed, a phenomenon quite new, & rather magical to me.

I trained as a documentary photographer some years ago, but have always had an abiding interest in natural history & the landscape......
