A still life of the humble onion. Placed on a pewter warming plate (over 250 years old. In its day it would have been filled with hot water to keep food warm. There are tiny cutlery scratches on it from many meals eaten). The birch twigs are from a tree in my garden, with the small black and white plaster panel giving height and adding interest. Behind the onion is a wire kitchen strainer on its side. My work is minimalist and inspired by the rooms we inhabit and the things within. Recently, my photographic focus has swung from light filled scenes into calm dark velvety ones. In these still life photographs I place disparate objects together; an onion, a glass vessel, a pewter warming plate, setting them against a dark shadowy background. On one level, the work is an abstract experience of colour, form, texture. But it's also an invitation to be present and to listen to the whispering stillness of ordinary things
