"The Oreads" is inspired by a painting of the same name by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. (See Below) In ancient greek mythology the oreads were mountain nymphs, semi-immortal creatures known for their beauty, guardianship of nature, and love. Here they are overlooked by three satyrs (half man, half goat) depicted in ominous dark tones, and fly into the sky, fading out into a cloud-like wisp. This original print is made by etching and aquatint to create lines and tones onto zinc plate, and hand layering ink in many different colours before printing onto handmade paper. My work is often inspired by greek mythology and the enduring relationship it has with art and literature. My background is actually in chemical biology research into infectious diseases, my familiarity with technical processes helps me with printmaking, which I have been practising for the past 8 years.
