I get often asked how I got into using gunpowder in my work? Well to be honest it was during a time of transition. I only started using gunpowder after the breakup of my last serious relationship in 2017. Most normal folks would either go partying, meeting up with friends, go on holiday, just anything normal to distract them. For me, it was blowing things up! On a serious note, I was a successful oil painter in my twenties and early thirties, but as most things in life, I needed a change in my own art practice hence the reason I returned to drawing using gunpowder. When I ignite gunpowder on the surface, I have not idea how it will turn out. It's only when the spontaneous mark making occurs is when I really have to innovate and in some sense bring out the subject matter. This approach in making art is high risk as the risk of failure is always there, but if I can it off the rewards are worth it visually. In essence I'm operating on the edge with my work!
