Painting 1 - Emma Spence
Title: "You may put wellies on"
Price: £5750
Medium: Mixed media
Dimensions: 100 x120cms
This painting is of a winter hedgerow from an overgrown laneway on our home farm. I was attracted to paint the textures of the hedgerow, emphasised and highlighted by the frost on the branches and plants embedded in the hedge that frosty morning.
I challenged myself to paint the painting in 3 primary, cold colours to see how the tones of the colours used, help create the sense of cold that morning.
When I said to my nephew who works on the family farm and and knows and works the fields and hedges better than I, that I was going to paint this hedge, his response was, "you may put your wellies on" as he knew how wet the land was at the time. Hence the title of the piece.
Painting 2 - Emma Spence
Title: "It should be dry enough"
Price: £5750
Medium: Mixed media
Dimensions: 100 x120cms
This piece is the same hedgerow as "you may put your wellies on." Instead of winter it is the same hedge in springtime. I wanted to see the difference between the hedges in different seasons looking at the change in colour texture and plants growing in the same hedge.
I challenged myself to use a warm tone palette of primary colours more fitting to a warmer season than the winter scene, again seeing how limiting my palette and using warm tones creates a warmer feeling to the piece.
The title again is the response of my nephew who works on the family farm, when I asked him if I needed wellies again to go paint the hedgerow.
