This painting is part of a series exploring the aesthetic qualities of cardboard boxes. I find their muted, subtle surfaces and muted colors provide a perfect opportunity for experiments into color relationships and shifts in temperature and tone. A focus in this piece is the composition, which is intentionally built around a central void. Rather than creating a focal point that projects outward, I aimed to craft a quiet, empty space that draws the viewer in, encouraging a slower, more contemplative mode of looking. This approach invites a moment of reflection and quiet engagement with the painted surface. For this particular painting I also wanted to experiment with how the more chromatic underpainting could inform the work in a way I had previously been more subtle about.
