This drawing 'Family Secrets' is from a series I am working on currently.
It is inspired by a little cluster of trees which I pass every day on my walk.
I see this group of trees as a metaphor for family.
Each tree is individual but once they become part of a group they then transform into something more dynamic. This group/family takes on a personality of its own, as it conveys a story of relationship and community, and of belonging.
I start by making a small quick study drawing in my notebook, and then once I am back in my studio I begin work on a larger scale.
I use charcoal and slowly build up layers on heavy paper.
When the drawing is almost complete, I apply tiny specks of coloured pastel to convey the experience of seeing sparkles of light coming through the dense treetops.
