"Looking for Mondrian" Acrylic on reclaimed wood.
Looking for Mondrian was inspired by a trip to the city of Amsterdam earlier this year and a visit the Rijks museum.
In their delicious café the featured chocolate bun is designed to look like a typical Dutch house. My attention was drawn by the gold-coloured box that it came in, as when opened out, it made an interesting shape which seemed to reflect the architecture of the city. Having devoured the bun, I preserved the little box and brought it home, using it as a template for a series of small paintings whose colours were inspired by seeing the Mondrian paintings at the museum.
"From the Yellow House" Acrylic on reclaimed wood.
The reclaimed wood is the floor from an old dolls house which I wanted to use because the surface bears the scars and grooves of its former use. This gives me a lead into the work and suggests a title. Like the former work, I used a template, this time the cardboard came from a box which had contained strawberries. The shape was reminiscent of the wings of an angel or a dove.
