Royal Ulster Academy of Arts Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Policy

The Royal Ulster Academy is committed to supporting artists and artistic excellence while engaging responsibly with emerging technologies. This policy sets out how AI may be used within the Academy’s exhibitions and operations.

1.  Core Principles

  • • Artists and human creativity remain central to all RUA activity.
  • • AI is treated as a tool, not an author or decision-maker.
  • • Transparency, ethical practice, and professional standards are essential.

2.  AI and Exhibition Submissions

  • • AI-assisted artworks may be submitted where the artist retains clear authorship and creative control.
  • • The use of AI must be fully disclosed at the point of submission.
  • • Fully AI-generated artworks are not eligible for submission.
  • • All works are selected and judged by human selectors and jurors.
  • • AI-assisted works may be identified as such in exhibitions or publications.

3.  Ethical Responsibilities

Artists using AI must ensure their practice respects copyright, consent, and professional standards.

4.  Use of AI by the RUA

The RUA may use AI for non-artistic purposes such as administration, communications, and marketing, with appropriate human oversight. AI will not be used to generate artworks or replace curatorial, selection, or prize decisions.

5.  Governance

This policy is reviewed regularly by Council and may be updated as technology and sector standards evolve. Breaches may result in the rejection of work or other appropriate action.
